Subaru WRX STI VA (2015-2021) Wheel Fitment Guide
The 2015-2021 Subaru WRX STI (VA chassis) is the fourth and final generation of the STI sold in the US — a seven-year run that ended after the 2021 model year when Subaru retired both the model and the EJ257 engine stateside. Every USDM VA STI shares identical wheel hardware: a 5×114.3 bolt pattern, 56.1mm center bore, and M12×1.25 lug nuts with 60° conical seats, torqued to 89 lb-ft. Two year-era differences shape wheel selection. First, the 2018 mid-cycle refresh upgraded the standard STI from 4-piston front Brembo calipers (326mm rotors, 2015-2017) to 6-piston front Brembo calipers (340mm rotors, 2018-2021) — both clear 18″ wheels, but the 6-pot does not clear OEM 17″ wheels. Second, the generation produced two USDM-specific limited variants with unique OEM hardware: the 2018 Type RA and the 2019 S209. Because the VA STI is all-wheel drive with a center differential that requires matched rolling circumference at all four corners, every documented setup in this guide is square — front and rear identical — so wheels and tires can be rotated and the center diff stays happy.
About this guide: The fitment data below is compiled from owner-submitted builds and enthusiast forum research across NASIOC (the North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club) and IWSTI. We summarize what VA STI owners have reported running successfully so you have a researched starting point for your build.
Every FMB build goes through a sanity check and an engineering verification before forging. We cross-reference the configuration you're ordering against your trim and brake package and what's commonly documented on similar builds — and our manufacturing partner verifies the wheel itself (backspace, brake caliper clearance, structural spec) before production begins.
Fitment decisions involving ride height, tire choice, and suspension setup are yours and your installer's call. Use this guide as research, not as a substitute for a real fitment conversation.
Every USDM VA STI shares the same hardware: 5×114.3 bolt pattern, 56.1mm center bore, M12×1.25 lug nuts with 60° conical seats, torqued to 89 lb-ft. All factory configurations are square — front and rear identical — which is the correct architecture for the AWD center differential. The Base and Premium trims ran an 18×8.5 ET55 wheel across the full generation (the design changed visually in the 2018 refresh, but dimensions and offset stayed the same), while the Limited moved to a 19×8.5 ET55 wheel in 2018 alongside the 6-piston Brembo upgrade. Two USDM-specific limited editions produced unique factory hardware: the 2018 Type RA on a forged 19×8.5 ET55, and the 2019 S209 on a wider, lower-offset forged 19×9 ET48 paired with widebody fenders.

Standard delivery on the VA STI Base and Premium across the full 2015-2021 generation. The wheel design changed visually in the 2018 mid-cycle refresh, but dimensions and offset stayed identical at 18×8.5 ET55. The square 18×8.5 setup means front and rear wheels are identical and rotatable — important on the AWD platform where rolling circumference must match across all four corners within tight tolerance. The 2018-2019 version of this wheel does not clear the pre-2018 4-piston Brembos, while the 2020-2021 version does; this is relevant only for owners cross-swapping pre-2018 and 2020-2021 STI wheels, not for typical aftermarket purchase decisions.

The optional upgrade on the STI Limited from 2015 through 2017. Same dimensions and offset as the standard cast Enkei wheel, but roughly 2 lbs lighter per corner thanks to forged construction — meaningful unsprung-mass reduction for a daily-driven enthusiast platform. Discontinued as a Limited option after 2017, when the BBS forged wheel became reserved for the Type RA, S209, and Series.White special editions. Square 18×8.5 ET55, so directly interchangeable with the standard cast wheel on any VA STI.
Applies To2018 STI Type RA · 2020 STI Series.White (bronze finish)
The 2018 Type RA was a USDM-only limited edition celebrating Subaru's Nürburgring record-attempt effort, capped at 500 units. Its BBS forged wheel saved roughly 4 lbs per corner versus the standard Limited 19″ cast wheel — significant on a chassis whose stock 19″ cast wheel weighs around 28 lbs. The same forged design returned in bronze on the 2020 Series.White. Same dimensions and offset as the standard Limited 19″ wheel, so it directly cross-fits any VA STI. Type RA cars are now collectible, and owners typically preserve the originals while running aftermarket sets for daily use.

Applies To2019 STI S209 (USDM only)
The first STI "S-line" model ever sold in the US, limited to 209 units. The S209 wheel is wider (9″ vs 8.5″) and lower offset (ET48 vs ET55) than any other VA STI OEM wheel — combined with the S209's widebody fenders, this gives it a substantively more aggressive stance that matches its 341-hp HKS-turbocharged powertrain. The 265/35R19 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600A is an S209-exclusive compound. Bolting S209 wheels to a standard-body STI without the wide fenders results in significant fender protrusion — these wheels were designed around the S209's wider track. Two color/wheel pairings only: WR Blue Pearl with dark gray BBS, or Crystal White Pearl with gold BBS. Now collectible; most owners preserve the originals and run aftermarket sets for street use.
Aftermarket Options
Aftermarket Wheel & Tire Configurations
The VA STI is one of the most-documented aftermarket wheel platforms in the enthusiast world, and the 18×9.5 +38 square setup has emerged as its de facto standard flush spec. Because the car is all-wheel drive with a center differential that needs matched rolling circumference at all four corners, every documented setup below is square — staggered configurations aren't recommended on this platform, so there's no separate staggered section. Most documented builds live in an 18″ window between roughly +30 and +45 offset on 8.5″–9.5″ widths, with more aggressive owners dropping into the low +20s and adding fender work. The 56.1mm factory hub is small relative to most aftermarket center bores (typically 73.1mm), so hub-centric rings are required for any aftermarket wheel with a larger bore. Each card below documents a configuration that VA STI owners run, with sources tied to named owner builds and vendor fitment documentation.
⚠️Platform-specific fitment notes — VA WRX STI
Brake clearance differs by year-era.
2015-2017 STIs use 4-piston 326mm front Brembo calipers; 2018-2021 STIs use 6-piston 340mm front Brembo calipers. Both clear 18″ wheels with appropriate spoke geometry, but the 6-pot Brembos do not clear OEM 17″ wheels. On 2018-2021 cars, high-spoke-count or thick-profile 18″ wheel designs can still interfere with the 6-pot caliper — confirm caliper-to-spoke clearance with the wheel manufacturer before ordering.
Hub-centric rings are required.
The 56.1mm OEM hub bore is small relative to most aftermarket wheel center bore standards (typically 73.1mm). Hub-centric rings (56.1mm vehicle / 73.1mm wheel) are required for any aftermarket wheel with a larger bore, otherwise vibration at highway speed will result. Subaru OEM lug nuts use a slightly different tapered seat profile than the standard aftermarket 60° conical — most owners running aftermarket wheels purchase matching 60° conical lug nuts rather than reusing the OEM set.
AWD rolling diameter — square only.
The VA STI's center differential requires consistent rolling circumference across all four corners. Running mismatched tire diameters or significantly different wear levels stresses the center differential over time. Always run identical wheels and tires across all four corners, replace tires as a complete set, and rotate regularly. The math should be checked against your owner manual before committing — we document tire dimensions on every card; verifying compatibility is your responsibility.
Tire-brand sensitivity at 265 width.
Fender clearance with 265/35R18 tires depends meaningfully on tire brand. Some brands run true to size while others run wider, so a 265 that clears on one brand can rub on another. Always verify clearance against your specific tire choice rather than assuming all 265-section tires fit identically.

The de facto standard flush fitment for the VA STI — documented across thousands of owner builds and the platform's long-running aftermarket fitment threads. The 18×9.5 ET38 wheel pushes the face outward to fill the well evenly front and rear for a flush-with-fender stance. With the committed 255/35R18 tire, owners commonly report clean bolt-on fitment at stock ride height with no rolling required; 245/40R18 is the most conservative tire choice and is also reported as guaranteed no-rub. The wider 265/35R18 is heavily documented on this offset too and is the look most associated with the spec, though some owners report rear fender contact at full compression and run a precautionary fender roll, especially when lowered. Clears both the 4-pot (2015-2017) and 6-pot (2018-2021) front Brembos; vendor fitment documentation specifically notes this offset was developed to clear both caliper generations. Commonly paired tire options: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02, Yokohama Advan Sport.

The conservative flush option — the same 9.5″ width as the popular spec but a higher ET45 offset that sits the wheel a touch further inboard, trading a little visual aggression for added clearance margin. Documented running 265/35R18 at this offset, including an autocross build that reported the wheels fit with plenty of space and no rubbing, and a gallery build on lowered suspension. Particularly popular among owners who want the wider 9.5″ rim look but prefer extra clearance on poor road surfaces or with aggressive driving inputs. Clears both 4-pot and 6-pot front Brembos. A solid choice for owners who prioritize zero rubbing risk over absolute flush appearance. Commonly paired tire options: Falken Azenis RT615K+, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02.

A documented alternative that keeps the OEM 8.5″ rim width at a more aggressive ET30 offset, for owners who want aftermarket stance while retaining factory-style wheel proportions — and for owners planning to reuse 245/40R18 factory-size tires at the time of a wheel swap. The single verified build runs this spec on lowering coilovers with 245/40R18 tires, so treat it as a documented lowered fitment rather than a stock-height claim; at stock ride height it should be more conservative still. Lighter rim profile than the 9.5″ widths, which is why it shows up on track-oriented builds where unsprung weight matters more than visual width. Clears both 4-pot and 6-pot front Brembos. Commonly paired tire options: Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, Bridgestone Potenza Sport.

A slightly more aggressive sibling to the popular +38 spec — the same 9.5″ width, three millimeters lower offset, pushing the face a touch further outboard. Behavior with the documented 265/35R18 tire is tire- and ride-height-dependent: one build runs it stock with no modification and no rubbing, while another on lowering coilovers documents pulling and rolling the rear fenders to clear the same tire. That spread is why this card sits a notch more aggressive than the bolt-on +38 — at the wide 265 tire, expect to evaluate fender clearance rather than assume a clean bolt-on, especially when lowered. Vendor fitment documentation lists this offset as a recommended STI fitment and notes it can need a rear roll depending on tire. Clears both 4-pot and 6-pot front Brembos. Commonly paired tire options: Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4, Nankang NS-20, Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02.

The aggressive end of the documented VA STI square range — a stance-oriented fitment that pushes the 9.5″ wheel well outboard at ET22. Documented across several owner and gallery builds running 255/35R18 (and 245/40R18) at this offset; one stock-suspension build reports the rears as "not that bad," but rear fender rolling is the common thread, and most documented examples run lowered ride height with added negative camber to tuck the wheel under the lip. With wider tires or a meaningful drop, expect to roll — and potentially pull — the rear fenders. Clears both 4-pot and 6-pot front Brembos. Best suited to owners committed to the maximum-stance look and willing to do fender work. Commonly paired tire options: Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02, Falken Azenis FK510, Nitto NT05.
Our Process
What happens when you build with FMB
The configurations above are a starting point — not a final spec. When you start your VA STI build, here's what actually happens before anything is forged:
FMB sanity check.
We cross-reference the configuration you're ordering against your trim and brake package — 4-pot or 6-pot Brembo, OEM 56.1mm hub, square AWD circumference — and compare it to what's commonly documented on similar VA STI builds. If the setup you want falls outside what we've seen work on this platform, we'll flag it before you commit.
Manufacturer engineering verification.
Our manufacturing partner verifies the wheel itself — backspace, brake caliper clearance for your brake package, and structural spec — before production begins.
Design render approval.
You see the final design and confirmed specs before any aluminum is touched.
Ride height, tire choice, alignment, and suspension setup are variables your installer handles on the car — not things we verify from our end. That's why we ask for the vehicle details we do on the build form: they're the inputs we can actually check against.
What are the OEM wheels on the 2015-2021 Subaru WRX STI?
Standard delivery on the STI Base and Premium across the full 2015-2021 generation was an 18×8.5 ET55 cast aluminum (Enkei) wheel with 245/40R18 tires, square. The STI Limited had the optional BBS forged 18×8.5 ET55 wheel from 2015-2017, then moved to a 19×8.5 ET55 cast wheel with 245/35R19 tires from 2018-2021, alongside the 6-piston front Brembo upgrade. Two USDM-specific limited variants produced unique OEM wheels: the 2018 Type RA (BBS forged 19×8.5 ET55, 500 units, gold) and the 2019 S209 (BBS forged 19×9 ET48, 209 units, dark gray or gold). All OEM wheels share the 5×114.3 bolt pattern, 56.1mm center bore, and M12×1.25 lug nut hardware.
Did the VA STI brakes change during the 2015-2021 production run?
Yes. The 2018 mid-cycle refresh upgraded the standard STI from 4-piston front Brembo calipers with 326mm rotors to 6-piston front Brembo calipers with 340mm rotors, and rear rotors grew from 316mm to 326mm. The caliper finish changed from gold (2015-2017) to yellow (2018-2021). The 2019 S209 uses a unique silver-painted 6-piston front Brembo with drilled rotors and STI performance pads. All VA STI configurations across both eras run an 18-inch wheel minimum and clear OEM. The 6-piston Brembos do not clear OEM 17-inch wheels — relevant only if you're trying to fit a smaller wheel for winter or track use.
What is the bolt pattern, center bore, and lug nut spec on the VA STI?
5×114.3 bolt pattern, 56.1mm center bore, M12×1.25 thread pitch lug nuts with 60-degree conical seats and a 19mm hex. Torque spec is 89 lb-ft (120 Nm). The 56.1mm OEM center bore is small relative to most aftermarket wheel center bore standards (typically 73.1mm) — hub-centric rings (56.1mm vehicle / 73.1mm wheel) are required when installing aftermarket wheels with larger center bores, otherwise vibration at highway speed results. Subaru OEM lug nuts use a slightly different tapered seat profile than the standard aftermarket 60-degree conical; most owners running aftermarket wheels buy matching 60-degree conical lug nuts rather than reusing the OEM set.
What is the most popular aftermarket wheel size for the VA STI?
18×9.5 ET38, square, is the de facto standard flush configuration for the VA STI, and has been the platform's most popular spec since the chassis launched in 2015. It's documented across thousands of owner builds plus vendor fitment documentation that notes the offset was developed to clear both the 4-piston (2015-2017) and 6-piston (2018-2021) front Brembos. At stock ride height, owners commonly report bolt-on fitment with 245/40R18 or 255/35R18 tires and no rolling required. The wider 265/35R18 is the look most associated with the spec, though some owners run a precautionary rear fender roll with it, especially when lowered.
What aftermarket wheel sizes are commonly documented on the VA STI at stock ride height?
At stock ride height, the most commonly documented setups are 18-inch square configurations between roughly +38 and +45 offset. The 18×9.5 ET38 setup with 245/40R18 or 255/35R18 tires is the de facto standard, documented as bolt-on with no fender rolling at stock height; the 18×9.5 ET45 setup is the more conservative direct-fit option with extra clearance margin; and the 18×8.5 ET30 setup keeps OEM rim width with a more aggressive offset (the verified build runs it on lowering coilovers, so it's a touch more conservative at stock height). More aggressive offsets — 18×9.5 ET35 with a wide 265 tire, and 18×9.5 ET22 — are documented too but typically involve evaluating or rolling the rear fenders, especially when lowered. All clear both 4-piston and 6-piston front Brembos. Hub-centric rings (56.1mm vehicle / 73.1mm wheel) are required for any wheel with a 73.1mm bore, and square setups are mandatory on this AWD platform.
What's the difference between flush and aggressive fitment on the VA STI?
Flush fitment means the tire sits roughly level with the fender edge at stock ride height — on the VA STI that's commonly documented in the 18×9.5 ET38 to ET45 range, where owners typically report clean clearance without fender work. Aggressive fitment pushes the wheel face further outboard with lower offsets (ET35 with a wide tire, down to ET22 and below) and generally requires rolling — sometimes pulling — the rear fenders, often paired with lowered ride height and added negative camber to tuck the wheel under the lip. Aggressive setups deliver more visual stance but require more fender attention. The stance dots on each card above map this spectrum: 1 dot is the most conservative documented setup for the platform, 5 dots is the most aggressive.
Do I need square or staggered wheels on the VA STI?
Square only. The VA STI is all-wheel drive with a center differential that requires consistent rolling circumference across all four wheels — running staggered tire diameters or wheel widths stresses the center differential and can cause damage over time. Every OEM VA STI configuration is square (front and rear identical), and aftermarket setups should follow the same approach. Most documented aftermarket configurations use 18×9.5 ET38 or similar specs all around. Tire wear should be matched across all four corners through regular rotation; replacing only two tires at a time on this platform creates rolling-circumference mismatches that affect AWD operation.
Can I run aftermarket wheels with my factory Brembo brakes?
Yes — both the 2015-2017 4-piston Brembos and the 2018-2021 6-piston Brembos clear properly designed 18-inch aftermarket wheels. The 6-piston caliper on 2018-2021 STIs is larger, and some 18-inch wheel designs with thick or high-count spoke profiles can have clearance issues, so confirm caliper-to-spoke clearance before ordering. The most popular aftermarket offsets (18×9.5 +38, +45, +35, and 18×8.5 +30) are documented as clearing the 6-pot Brembos. 17-inch wheels do NOT clear the 6-pot front calipers on 2018-2021 STIs — for a 17-inch winter or track wheel you'd need to retain pre-2018 4-piston brakes or use calipers designed for 17-inch clearance. 19-inch wheels clear both caliper generations in any documented offset.
What tire sizes work best for stock and aggressive setups?
For OEM-equivalent fitment: 245/40R18 (matches OEM diameter on 2015-2017 STIs and 2018-2021 Base/Premium) or 245/35R19 (matches the 2018-2021 Limited and Type RA). For the 18×9.5 +38 popular flush setup: 245/40R18 (most conservative), 255/35R18 (the balanced committed choice), or 265/35R18 (widest, may want a precautionary rear roll). For 18×9.5 +35 and the aggressive 18×9.5 +22 setups: 255/35R18 or 265/35R18, generally with rear fender rolling. Maintain identical tires across all four corners for AWD compatibility — tire diameter mismatches stress the center differential. Note that 265-section tires vary by brand: some run true to size, some wider, so verify clearance against your specific tire.
Are there any platform-specific fitment issues to watch for on the VA STI?
Three recur across the VA STI aftermarket community. First, the 56.1mm OEM hub bore is small relative to most aftermarket center bore standards — if your wheel has a 73.1mm bore, hub-centric rings are mandatory to prevent vibration. Second, fender clearance with 265/35R18 tires depends meaningfully on tire brand: some brands run true to size while others run wider, so always verify clearance with your specific tire rather than assuming all 265s fit identically. Third, the 6-piston Brembo on 2018-2021 STIs does not clear all 18-inch wheel designs — high-spoke-count or thick-profile designs can interfere with the caliper, so confirm caliper clearance with the wheel manufacturer for 2018-2021 cars before ordering.
What about spacers on the VA STI?
Spacers come up in two contexts on this platform. The first is hub-centric rings, which are not spacers but are required when an aftermarket wheel's 73.1mm bore is larger than the 56.1mm factory hub — they center the wheel and prevent vibration. The second is offset fine-tuning: if you run a spacer with the factory or an aftermarket wheel, you need extended lug studs or longer lug nuts sized for the added thickness to keep safe thread engagement. For custom forged wheels, FMB delivers at the effective offset directly — the cards above show as-forged offsets, so you don't need a spacer to reach the documented face position. That's a cleaner installation than running a higher-offset wheel plus a spacer to achieve the same stance.
What are the best winter wheel options for the VA STI?
The key constraint is brake clearance by year-era. On 2018-2021 STIs, the 6-piston front Brembo does not clear 17-inch wheels, so winter wheels need to be 18-inch or larger — a square 18×8.5 or 18×9.5 setup in a conservative offset (around +38 to +45) with a dedicated winter tire is the common documented approach. On 2015-2017 STIs with the 4-piston front Brembo, 17-inch winter wheels can clear depending on the specific wheel design, which broadens winter tire selection. In all cases, keep the winter setup square and run matched tires across all four corners for the AWD center differential. Commonly documented winter tire pairings include Bridgestone Blizzak and Michelin X-Ice.
Are the Type RA and S209 wheels interchangeable with standard STI wheels?
The Type RA wheel (19×8.5 ET55 BBS forged) is dimensionally identical to the standard 2018-2021 STI Limited 19-inch wheel — different construction (forged vs cast) and different finish (gold), but the same dimensions, offset, and hub spec. It directly cross-fits any VA STI. The S209 wheel is fundamentally different: 19×9 ET48, designed around the S209's widebody fenders. Bolting S209 wheels to a standard-body VA STI without the wide fenders results in significant fender protrusion — the S209 wheel sits roughly 7mm further outboard at the face than the OEM 19×8.5 ET55, on top of being an inch wider. Most S209 owners preserve the originals for collectability and run aftermarket sets for daily driving.
Can I use base WRX wheels on my STI, or STI wheels on a base WRX?
Physically, the VA-generation base WRX and the WRX STI share the same 5×114.3 bolt pattern, 56.1mm center bore, and M12×1.25 conical-seat hardware, so wheels bolt up between them. The practical caveats are brakes and stance. The STI's larger Brembo calipers (especially the 2018-2021 6-piston front) set a higher minimum spoke-clearance bar than the base WRX's smaller brakes — a wheel that clears a WRX may not clear an STI Brembo. And aggressive widths and low offsets that work on the base WRX don't necessarily suit the STI; vendor fitment documentation specifically flags some wide aggressive setups (for example 18×10.5) as WRX-fit but not STI-fit. As a rule, verify brake clearance for your specific caliper and treat the two cars as related-but-distinct for aggressive fitments rather than assuming a WRX spec transfers to the STI unchanged.
What year range does this guide cover?
2015-2021 USDM. The VA chassis WRX STI launched for model year 2015 and ran through model year 2021 — the final year of the WRX STI in the United States. Subaru announced the STI's discontinuation alongside the retirement of the EJ257 engine, and the 2022+ VB chassis WRX is sold without an STI variant in the US. The 2021 STI was offered in Base, Premium, and Limited trims, all sharing the 6-piston Brembo package and the 18×8.5 (Base/Premium) or 19×8.5 (Limited) wheels introduced with the 2018 refresh. There was no USDM "Final Edition" — the EJ25 Final Edition was a limited run for other markets. This guide does not apply to the 2022+ VB WRX, which uses different hardware.
How does FMB verify fitment before forging my wheels?
Every FMB order goes through a sanity check and an engineering verification before any aluminum is forged. First, our team cross-references the configuration you're ordering against your trim and brake package — including the 4-pot vs 6-pot Brembo clearance, hub-centric ring requirements, and AWD circumference compatibility — and flags anything that falls outside what's commonly documented on similar VA STI builds. Second, our manufacturing partner verifies the wheel itself: backspace, brake caliper clearance for your specific brake package, hub fitment, and structural spec, before production begins. You then approve the final design render and confirmed specs before any work starts. Ride height, tire choice, and alignment are things your installer handles on the car; the fitment guides on this site are researched starting points for making those decisions with your installer.
